RESUMO

In this study we present an investigation of electrically tunable progressive lenses utilizing liquid crystals (LC). We introduce a polarized progressive LC lens capable of dynamically adjusting its focal length, functioning as either a positive or negative lens. Our findings reveal that the spatial distribution of lens power within the progressive LC lens, ranging from +4D to -3D, far surpassing the range of -0.87D to +0.87D which one may expect within the parabolic wavefront approximation. For a lens with a 30 mm aperture a total tunable range is 7.6 D (from +5.6D to -2D) which is 4.75 times larger than the traditional parabolic prediction∼1.6D (from +0.8D to -0.8D). This study not only challenges conventional limitations set by optical phase differences in gradient-index LC lenses (the power law) but also ushers in a new possibility for ophthalmic applications. The profound insights and outcomes presented in this paper redefine the landscape of LC lenses, paving the way for transformative advancements in optics and beyond.

IMPORTANCE: The cancer risks associated with treatment with topical calcineurin inhibitors (TCIs) in patients with atopic dermatitis (AD) remain controversial, and limited evidence exists regarding the cancer risks among patients with AD treated with TCIs in Asian populations. OBJECTIVES: This study identified the association between TCI use and the risks of developing all cancers, lymphoma, skin cancers, and other cancers. DESIGN: This study was a nationwide, population-based, retrospective cohort study. SETTING: Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database. PARTICIPANTS: Patients diagnosed at least twice with ICD-9 code 691 or at least one time with ICD-9 codes 691 or 692.9 within 1 year between 1 January 2003 and 31 December 2010 were included and followed until 31 December 2018. Hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were estimated using the Cox proportional hazard ratio model. EXPOSURES: Patients using tacrolimus or pimecrolimus were identified in the National Health Insurance Research Database and compared with patients using topical corticosteroids (TCSs). MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES: The main outcomes were hazard ratios (HRs) of cancer diagnoses and associated outcomes obtained from the Taiwan Cancer Registry database. RESULTS: After propensity score (PS) matching, the final cohort included 195,925 patients with AD, including 39,185 who were initial TCI users and 156,740 who were TCS users. Propensity score matching was performed according to age, sex, index year, and Charlson Comorbidity Index using a ratio of 1:4. Except for leukemia, HR and 95% CI showed no significant associations between TCI use and the risk of developing all cancer, lymphoma, skin cancers, and other cancers. Sensitivity analysis showed that the lag time HRs for every cancer subtype continued to show no significant association between TCI use and cancer risk, except for leukemia. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: Our study found no evidence to support an association between TCI use and the risks of almost all cancers compared with TCS use in patients with AD, but physicians should be aware of potentially higher risks of leukemia with TCI use. This study represents the first population-based study focused on the cancer risk of TCI use among patients with AD in an Asian population.

The major challenges of augmented reality (AR) systems and virtual reality (VR) systems are varifocal images for vergence-accommodation conflict (VAC) and vision corrections. In this paper, we design a liquid crystal (LC) lens set consisting of three LC lenses for varifocal images and vision corrections in AR and VR. Four operating modes of such a LC lens set present three electrically tunable lens powers: 0, -0.79 diopters, -2 diopters, and -3.06 diopters by means of manipulation of polarization of incident light using electrically tunable half-wave-plates. The response time is fast(< 50 ms). We also demonstrate AR and VR systems by adopting the LC lens set to exhibit functions of varifocal images and vision corrections which enable to solve VAC as well as vision problem in AR and VR.

RESUMO

We demonstrate a single-shot and image-based polarization detection system for material recognition. The Stokes parameters are measured under a single-shot measurement using 4 electrically tunable liquid crystal wave plates, 4 polarizers, and 4 camera modules. The optical principle is introduced and the experiments are performed. We also use a metallic plate and a glass substrate to demonstrate the material recognition. The impact of this study is to provide a practical way in image-based polarization detection in Advanced Driver Assistance Systems for material recognition which could help in driving safety.

We report a one-pot facile synthesis of highly photoresponsive bovine serum albumin (BSA) templated bismuth-copper sulfide nanocomposites (BSA-BiZ/CuxS NCs, where BiZ represents in situ formed Bi2S3 and bismuth oxysulfides (BOS)). As-formed surface vacancies and BiZ/CuxS heterojunctions impart superior catalytic, photodynamic and photothermal properties. Upon near-infrared (NIR) irradiation, the BSA-BiZ/CuxS NCs exhibit broad-spectrum antibacterial activity, not only against standard multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacterial strains but also against clinically isolated MDR bacteria and their associated biofilms. The minimum inhibitory concentration of BSA-BiZ/CuxS NCs is 14-fold lower than that of BSA-CuxS NCs because their multiple heterojunctions and vacancies facilitated an amplified phototherapeutic response. As-prepared BSA-BiZ/CuxS NCs exhibited substantial biofilm inhibition (90%) and eradication (>75%) efficiency under NIR irradiation. Furthermore, MRSA-infected diabetic mice were immensely treated with BSA-BiZ/CuxS NCs coupled with NIR irradiation by destroying the mature biofilm on the wound site, which accelerated the wound healing process via collagen synthesis and epithelialization. We demonstrate that BSA-BiZ/CuxS NCs with superior antimicrobial activity and high biocompatibility hold great potential as an effective photosensitive agent for the treatment of biofilm-associated infections.
